In April 2010, as part of its commitment to generate 15% of the UK's energy from renewable sources by 2020, the government introduced the 'feed in tariff' scheme to reward consumers who install a 'microgeneration' system at their property.

For most people the simplest and most financially attractive microgeneration technology is solar photovoltaic or 'PV' panels which generate electricity from daylight.

INSTALLING SOLAR PANELS UNDER THE 'FEED IN TARIFF' SCHEME HAS A COMPELLING SET OF BENEFITS;
  • Earn money for generating electricity

  • Up to £750 per year from the 'feed in tariff' regardless of how much electricity you use on site
  • 25 years index linked and tax free income

  • Once you have installed the system the ‘feed in tariff’ or FIT is secured for 25 years rising with the Retail Prices Index each year. The income, which is paid direct to you, is tax free
  • Reduce your electricity bill

  • By up to £245 assuming 50% of the generated electricity is used on site. This saving is in addition to the income you get from the feed in tariff
  • Total Benefit of £1000 per year

  • The potential reduction in your electricity bill is in addition to the benefit from the feed in tariff for generating your own electricity making a total potential annual benefit of almost £1000 for a householder installing a 4kWp system
  • Reduce your exposure to future energy price rises

  • Electricity currently costs an average of 14.6p per unit after the recent price rises and this is set to continue rising in the coming years
  • Better returns than savings

  • Up to 11% per annum
  • Reduce your carbon footprint

  • A typical installation will reduce carbon emissions by up to 1.8 tonnes every year
  • Add value to your property

  • “Surveys conducted across Europe and America revealed that the addition of solar panels to a house increases its retail value”. Independent 4th August 2010
    35% of respondents to a 2009 Energy Saving Trust survey said they would be willing to pay more for a home where some of their energy supply came from renewable resources; almost half said would like to know if their home is suitable for renewable energy
